CATAWBA YACHT CLUB ROWING
Catawba Yacht Club was organized in 1939 to promote boating on the river. The club is family oriented and members row, sail, power boat and enjoy the social events. Rowing started at the club in 1991 and members built a boat house for shells a few years afterwards.
Catawba Yacht Club is a membership club, but does provide opportunities for non-members to row on a regular basis. Members may store their boats in the club’s boathouse.
The club owns recreational singles, and racing doubles, quads and fours. Many club members have their own singles. Rowers range in age from mid 20’s to mid 60’s and vary in skill level from novices to former collegiate rowers. Many row for fun and exercise and others train for competition. The club participates in several regattas each year including US Rowing Southeast Regional and several fall head races in the region. We have sent rowers to the US nationals and the FISA international masters regatta.
Learn to Row- From time to time, the club has offered learn to row classes for those who wish to take up the sport. If you wish to be contacted when such classes are offered in the future, send an e-mail to that effect.
Youth Rowing- The club is the venue for Charlotte Youth Rowing, the high school age rowing program of the Siskey YMCA. The program operates under the auspices of the ‘Y” and is independent of the club although members are involved in the coaching of the youth.. The program is open to high school students and information is available via the link below to the Stratford Richardson YMCA or from Byron Walthall jwalth1590@aol.com
The rowing program maintains a rowing specific site here: CYC ROWING
Jay Kilkenny and Sharon Blackburn are the current rowing co-captains. If you wish to get additional information you may contact them at Phil Gilmore or p.gilmore@mindspring.com .
