Sailing Program

The Catawba Yacht Club is a private club that allows its members and guests of members to enjoy water sports on Lake Wylie, Charlotte, NC. Sailing has been a tradition in CYC since its inception in 1939. Although many sailing  members come out and sail just for pleasure all year around, there are formal racing programs for serious contenders. The primary racing seasons are Spring and Fall and the secondary seasons are Summer and Winter.

The sailing programs include both centerboard and fixed-keel boats. The primary classes of center-board  boats are the Lightning,  Vanguard and Wayfarer. The primary class of fixed-keel boats is the J/22. Other fixed-keel cruisers also participate in the these races. This group includes Merit, Ensign, Hunter, Irwin, Catalina, Macgregor, Pearson and others. All of the fixed-keel boats not in a fleet are included in a PHRF fleet.

CYC awards trophies in all classes in both the Spring and Fall series. CYC also awards a 1st place trophy in the Winter series.

The CYC Lightning fleet is a member of the Southeastern Lightning District and is registered as Fleet 365 with the International Lightning Class Association. CYC hosts a Lightning Regatta for the Southeastern District each Spring. CYC is also a member of the International J/22 Class Association and registered as Fleet 60.
